Recent books at the Arboretum Library of the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, the Multicultural Weaving Exhibtion and "Beer for Books"

Hello all and welcome newcomers:

I guess it’s a little late to say Happy New Year! Maybe I’ll just say thanks for the rain! My new interns, Brian Hall and Judy Low have started from California State University, San Jose, School of Library and Information Science. Brian is working on a collection development policy that states in writing what we collect and Judy is working on our periodical holdings and a criterion for deaccessioning some of our periodicals that would appear to be out of our scope. You can start to see the fruits of Judy’s labor in the online catalog. It will actually show what years the library owns for which magazines. Try a search in the “a’s” with periodicals as a keyword. The link is below.

Arboretum Library Online Catalog

This link below is to the new books added in December and January. Come visit our New Book Shelf and check out some of my favorite recent additions; Aeoniums Echeverias galore!

New books, articles and website lists

We are circulating to Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation members. The circulation period for books is 3 weeks with 2 renewals if no one else wants the item. You can renew by e-mail, phone or in person, but not on the online catalog. The circulation period for current magazines is 3 days with 2 renewals if no one else wants the item. Let me know if you are interested in any articles.

The Arboretum Library is also pleased to host a Multicultural Weaving Exhibition in the newly rearranged reading room. This is a collaborative exhibit with works from the Southern California Handweavers Guild, the Los Angeles Basketry Guild, the Freeway Lacers and our own Leigh Adams. The exhibit will be up in the library until March 30, 2009. Come visit! There is more about weaving activities in conjunction with the exhibition at our website.

The Arboretum Library hours for February are as follows:

Open Tuesday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Open Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Open Sundays, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Beer for Books and the L. A. Garden Show, May 1-3, 2009

During our upcoming L.A. Garden Show the Arboretum Library hosts a delightful Beer Garden tucked nearby the garden designers’ exhibit space in the Water Conservation Garden shade pavilion. The award winning Pasadena microbrewery Craftsman will feature two different brews for your enjoyment. The Beer Garden also features our used book sale. Susan Eubank, librarian and bartender, brings out the duplicate donations from the Arboretum Library. This allows the public to purchase used garden and plant books and magazines. The proceeds from the sales of beverages and the used materials all benefit the New Book Fund for the Arboretum Library.

We need your donations now!

Please bring your plant and garden used book and magazines donations to the Arboretum Library, so we can use them for the sale at the LA Garden Show. For more information about donations, please contact me at 626-821-3213 or Susan.Eubank@Arboretum.org.

Our Botanical Information Consultants (for plant advice) are currently available seven days a week, beginning February 16th. David.Lofgren@Arboretum.org or Frank.McDonough@Arboretum.org or 626-821-3239.

Happy reading!
